Monday Myth According To The Yorubas

Yorubas believe there are people with Oloriburuku personality(evil omen) They believe if you meet such people early in the morning. Aje(wealth) will divorce you instantly before you start your transaction for the day.

Aje according to Yoruba people is the (Orisa) deity of Wealth, social program and Money. Yorubas believe Monday is Ojo Aje.” Aje a wa O!.” So they say, meaning,’Orisa Aje will visit.’ This is the reason why, Yorubas are business-like on Mondays.

On Monday morning you can’t ask a Yoruba person to pay back his debt. You can’t pay them with your left hand. Even though it’s your money and you are a customer, it is a taboo. On Mondays customers are not always right. At the same time as a customer you will get the best deal in the market. Especially when you are their first customer on a Monday morning (Ojo Aje).
Do not utter profanity around a Yoruba trader. Rather approach them with warm smile and politeness. On Monday Yorubas will not loan you money even for your Fathers burial. Don’t ask from a Yoruba man to pay his rent on Monday. It is not a good gesture.

On Mondays an average Yoruba trader could be meticulous. Every event could be interpreted to have a spiritual connotation. They believe a bad day on Monday (Ojo Aje) can spell doom for the rest of the week (Ose).

Their observation ranges from who they saw and exchange greetings with in the morning. The tone of their fellow trader. The traffic, Weather, cloth and the list goes on.

Yoruba people are clairvoyance (Ifura) In nature. There is a saying in Yoruba that, “clairvoyance is the charm of old wise men (Ifura logun agba)” I will leave you with this phrase,”Ojo Monday Eko ko ni Gbagba ku gba” (no nonsense on Monday morning in Lagos (Eko).
